Magazine Task - Drafts (1)

I've made two advertisements that I'm trying to choose between. I'm still not sure what to use but like with my digi-pack, I thought I'd blog about them.

I decided to keep the same font from the front cover of the digi-pack for the artist's name so there was consistency and a link between the two. The shot in the background is a close up of one of the shots that wasn't used in the music video but i liked how it looked and the positioning of female.

From looking at research previously blogged about and through past examples, I knew that we needed to have bold writing and it was important to keep a theme throughout. I like the black and white colours as it compliments the album. The added sign of the 'like' button was a hint to the social media aspect that is on the back of the digi-pack and can help with the promotional activity that the artist would have when promoting their album.

Magazine Task - Plan

I always find it easier when planning to create something, to have a plan or outline to follow. So from looking at the research that I did, I've come up with a spider-map to help me!

Advert Research

Another task we are given to construct, is a magazine advertisement for our artist and video. I had a look around in order to gain inspiration for my own. Here is a few examples...

1)

2)
Pixie Lott's album advertisement that i also found in a old magazine, differs from the 1975 as firstly its representing the album but also has more text. I like how it keeps with the colour scheme of the album - black and pink - with the bod colours and has the album on the poster so everyone knows what album, it is talking about - even though I'm sure it happens regularly on album advertisements.

3)

4)

5SOS advertisement for their new album and EP is different from the other two but really good in its own way. It features the band themselves as well as their name and logo. Unlike in Pixie Lott's advert, the only feature the image from their debut album which also shows themselves. The writing looks like someone wrote it in a handwritten style which works really well with the doodles on the image creating a link. They've also stuck to their logo colours of black and red with the exception of the clothing so they stand out as artists on the  advert.

Showcase Evening

We had a great opportunity to showcase our final products with a school showcase evening. It featured all of the A2 and AS productions and allowed us to gain important audience feedback that we will need for our evaluation questions that will follow on.

As part of getting the audience feedback we came up with a set of questions for our audience to answer after watching our video. We gave a short introduction to the background behind the creation of the music video whilst also highlighting the skills we have used - rotoscoping being the main attraction.

We had a great turnout at the event, which meant great feedback!!

Digi Pack - End Product

After much trial and error, I think this will be best suited for my coursework digipack.

FRONT COVER

Out of all the shots we got for the singer performing the chorus, one of my favourite shots has to be when the individual is looking straight down the camera with an emotionless face. It doesn't portray happiness or sadness. The black and white effect enhances the features and makes the face stand out more. I wanted it to be plain and effective hence only the title of the album (also the name of our song) and the name of our artist. I liked the font we used as I felt it gave the writing an edge and made it stand out more.

INSIDE

I thought it was important to keep the card theme running through the whole work and also loved the idea of using our individuals as the album will be 'featuring the number 1 hit - Within an Inch of Reality - so I wanted to use the screenshots of the game which we see less off in the music video. The choice of cards on the left is actually the bottom left's hand in the game which contrasts because it's not a good hand yet the individual looks delighted.

BACK

We were quite blessed on our shoot day that the sun decided to shine when filming which allowed us to have a great shot of the sun beaming down as the singer was performing the chorus. Since the front had a black and white effect, it was made obvious to continue on at the back as the inside covers were in colour. I added the barcode which is necessary to have when someone is buying an album. The scanner on the bottom left of the back image is an added bonus to add to the attractiveness and to enhance the audience to buy the album in order to see the behind the scenes footage.

SPINE
I decided to keep the spine of the digipack simple and plain as it fitted in with the colour scheme and structure of the rest of it. I used the 'Marker Felt' font on word for the writing, that i've used in the back cover of the digipack and on the advert.

Drafts of DigiPack

On previous posts, I researched into artist's digipacks in order to gain inspiration from and to help with how i will construct my own.

I first decided like always, to spider map my plans to see what would match and get all my ideas into one place.

Whilst I played around with my App Store on my iPhone, I came across an app called Phonto. This allows text to be placed on the picture and it has a wide range of fonts to choose from. Below are a few front covers that I decided might be used and further edited in order to appear on my digipack.

Todorov

Tzvetan Todorov came up with the idea of the 'Narrative Theory' after reading and studying several films. He studied how the narrative tells the story in both fictional and non fictional context. This theory Tzvetan came up with explains how a narrative for a film is built up step by step to create the best possible story line.

Todorov stated in 1969 that narrative is often structured with a pattern of Equilibrium (everything is ok, stable, as it has been), Disequilibrium (a problem that threatens the equilibrium) and New Equilibrium (a new and slightly altered state resulting from the conflict)

There are five stages the narrative can progress through:

1. A state of equilibrium (All is as it should be.)

2. A disruption of that order by an event.

3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred.

4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption.

5. A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium

Ferdinand de Saussure

Ferdinand de Saussure & Semiotics

Ferdinand de Saussure was the founder of modern linguistics and explained that there is a relationship between speech and signs.  Saussure is one of the founding fathers of semiotics which he called semiology. His concept of the sign/signifier/signified/referent forms the core of the field.

Semiotics is the study of the language of signs. It looks at how signs work to produce meaning or the study of how things come to have significance. This is then applied to signs.

The Signified - is the meaning or the association the sign/symbol refers to. PHYSICAL

The Signifier - is a sign or a symbol. This can vary from a word, image or even colour.  MENTAL CONCEPT

Analysis Using Semiotics
  • When establishing the sign, it is usually something that comes from the mise-en-scene.
  • How does this 'sign' highlight to the audience something important to the scene.
  • Show an understanding of why this 'sign' was shown and what it's importance is.

End Product Feedback - Social Networking

The great thing about the modern day media, is that we get a wider range of ways to reach out and share our video's. As we finished our video, we decided to share our video on our Facebook accounts to see what people think and get some feedback on if we did as well as we thought. In under 12 hours, I had a lovely amount of comments, likes and even some 'shares' (from family).

Below are a few that i've screen shotted.

It's always nice to get praise for your work. This is making me SO excited for our showcase in a few weeks!

Clothing - Inspiration and In Construction

When researching about the backgrounds that we had chosen for the individuals, we decided to look on Google Images and Tumblr in order to see what items we should be dressing in and how realistic we will need to be.

Artist
We decided to dress the artist in black and dark clothing to help us to differentiate the individuals and not have her fall into any of the backgrounds.

Homeless Individual -
We decided to use a plain grey, baggy tracksuit with this individual as we wanted it to not fit and not be fashionable to enhance the homelessness and also to reflect on the background. We left the hair down and messed it up a bit to show that too.

However, when the individual is at the table, we dressed the character in a the same outfit but wearing the necklace that was thrown on the floor to connect the story and also changed the hairstyle to make appearance better.

School Girl
With this character, we wanted to make her change from a failing student to a student who is well put together and appears to be a strong individual. We did this by making the tie neater and having the hairstyle more neater and presentable.

Working Woman

We started off with the working girl being in office and having her dressed smart and having her hair up in a bun stressed, however at the table she is relaxed clothing and has her hair in a more relaxed fashion.

Lonely Girl -
Again, we used the hairstyle to be differentiate the background and card game whilst keeping her in the same outfit.
