Hello! I'm Ashleigh. I am currently studying Media and Sociology A2 and Psychology AS. I really enjoyed the creative side of AS Media and cannot wait to get stuck into the process of constructing our music video. I love learning and delving into the subject where I get a deeper understanding of what I am supposed to be doing.
The Deadline for our Prelim to show in class was Friday 18th July...and the music video is finished! Of course first of all we had to choose a song... "Who's Laughing Now" by Jessie J. In a previous post i uploaded the video when we was in the middle of the discussions.
Once we had our song, we had to do STORYBOARDING!!
As you can see we tried to do it as precise we could have and paid a lot of attention to detail. and THIS is our final prelim.
Laura Mulvey is a feminist and she looks at the way women are portrayed in media texts. Mulvey's male gaze theory states that media texts are created as if through the eyes of a heterosexual male - women are viewed for the pleasure of men.
The concept of the gaze is how the audience views the people presented. This could be;
How men look at women
How women look at themselves
How women look at other women
The main features of the male gaze, is where the camera lingers of curves of the female body through any type of shot but more noticeably a close up. The woman can also be seen in a sexual position where her body is curved in a way so that it highlights the womanly features and causes the audience to view from what a man 'sees' when watching a woman. Below are examples of how this is seen.
Jennifer Lopez - Live It Up ft Pitbull
Shakira ft Rihanna - Can't Remember to Forget you.
Mulvey states that the woman's role is seen in two ways:
1) Erotic object for characters in narrative view 2) Erotic object for audience view
Key theorist belief; Jonathan Schroeder (1988) - "to gaze implies more than to look at - it signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze"
Male Gaze in Music Video.
This video is a prime example of the male gaze in music videos. The lyrics 'I love the way she fills her clothes, she looks just like them girls in Vogue' are examples of how the males see women. Also this video features close ups of a girls bum and also has shots of the girls legs being panned up and down.
For our groups music video we’ve been discussing what genre of music we would want to use and have started researching some songs to consider. We have to be considerate of the fact that we are a group of girls that our producing the video as we need to make sure there is a lead female vocalist so that it will not look weird. 1.Pixie Lott – “Band Aid” Although Pixie Lott is a famous artist and has had a number of singles and album’s released, this song did not make it to be one on her album that would have a music video made. I like this song as it has a good beat and is an upbeat song that I think suits the type of music that we want. I think we would be able to create a good music video to represent the lyrics and make sure they can link together. The only wall that we may face is trying to get permission to use this as it can be seen as copyrighted. 2.Mandy Capristo – “The Way I Like It” Again not many people will be aware of Mandy Capristo as she is a German artist and it could work in our favour if we can get over the copyright. This song has the freedom of what we can use and perform to sculpt our video into what represents the lyrics. This song does has an official video but I feel we can do a completely different type of video but still keep true to the lyrics. 3.Taylor Swift – “I Knew You Where Trouble” This has an official video and also is a copyrighted song but it is a female artist with a good upbeat tempo which will allow us to use it and construct our video to the way we want it as the official one only shows Swift singing on stage.
The beginning of A2 is just the same as AS practical wise. First thing to do is a prelim! This year it will be myself and Karen working from Mac 5.
We've had a talk between ourselves and we want a music video that is upbeat, that has a good beat that we can play around with but also where we can incorporate and practice lip syncing. We looked at some previous video's made by our school but also by others. As a class and individually we really loved this video!
After looking at music video's we could use to base our prelim on we've had a few idea's: Jessie J - "Who's laughing now". This is because it is up tempo, features lip syncing and can also challenge us but also ease us into the genre as we look to do this with our main music video. Wish us luck!
